Benjamin South, tenor, is a versatile crossover artist from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He has performed as Prince Charmant in Pauline Viardot’s CINDERELLA, Second Trio Member in Leonard Bernstein’s TROUBLE IN TAHITI, Anatole in Daniel Shwartz’ THE FLOWER CRIES BLUE, Eddie Birdlace in Pasek & Paul’s DOGFIGHT, Laurie in Mark Adamo’s LITTLE WOMEN, Nemorino in Gaetano Donizetti’s THE ELIXIR OF LOVE, and T-Boy in Libby Larsen’s THE SILVER FOX. As a concert artist, Benjamin has had the privilege of being the tenor soloist for W.A. Mozart’s REQUIEM, J.S. Bach’s J.S. Bach’s BWV 1, BWV 147, BWV 172, MAGNIFICAT, G.F. Handel’s MESSIAH, MY HEART IS INDITING, and Nathaniel Dett’s THE CHARIOT JUBILEE.
In the coming months, Benjamin will be performing as Sam Polk in Carlisle Floyd’s SUSANNAH with Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, Teague in Jennifer Higdon’s COLD MOUNTAIN, and Charlie Dalrymple in BRIGADOON with the Seagle Music Festival. Benjamin is currently pursuing a D.M.A. in Performance & Pedagogy from the University of Colorado Boulder where he studies with Matthew Chellis. Additionally, he is completing the Vocology Certificate at New York University. He holds a M.M. in Voice Performance & Pedagogy from Ohio University where he studied voice with Daniel Stein and collaborative piano with Emely Phelps. He also holds a B.M. in Voice Performance from the University of North Alabama where he studied with Gretchen Windt. |
